Standards and Best Practices

Standards are necessary to demonstrate to the public, government and other stakeholders that a profession is dedicated to maintaining public trust and upholding the criteria of its professional practice.

CPSWs have been front line health care workers since the 90’s. On the front line they must provide health professional care to individuals, families, groups, communities and populations in a multiplicity of settings, standards have an important role in guiding CPSW practice.

NACPSW is a self-regulating profession, meaning that the provincial/territorial governments delegate to the CPSW the power to regulate itself in the interest of the public.

One of the characteristics of a self-regulating profession is the development of standards of practice, based on the values of the profession. For CPSWs in Canada, these values are articulated in the Code of Ethics for CPSWs.  Together, the code of ethics and standards provide the basis for Certified Caregivers/Personal Support Worker  practice in Canada. Therefore, the provincial/territorial regulatory bodies establish, monitor and enforce standards of professional practice through a registry.

CPSW Standards of Best Practice

NACPSW accredits standards that are developed by representatives of standards developing organizations, government agencies, consumer groups, companies, and others. These standards ensure that the characteristics and performance of products are consistent, that people use the same definitions and terms, and that products are tested the same way. NACPSW also accredits organizations that carry out product or personnel certification in accordance with requirements defined in international standards.
