Certification vs. Certificate for PSWs

The function of the National Association for Certified Caregivers/Personal Support Workers (NACPSW) is as a non-profit association, established as a steward of the PSW worker to measure an individual’s knowledge and skill as front line health care workers.

The NACPSW promotes voluntary certification as the preferred alternative to licensure and/or government regulation. It is a third party, standard-setting organization. In the assessment process, it measures mastery/competency, as gauged against a defensible set of standards, by the application of an exam. Certification is a measured and ongoing process.

A certificate is issued by the community colleges for any program under two years of training delivery. A certificate of completion of the training by members of the NACC is issued after completion of a third party exam. Certificates and not diplomas are offered for programs of night school, CEUs and completion of study that is not registered.

Many employers are viewing certification as an asset when determining which candidate will be hired.
